All engine out now have to be EPA Tier III and IV compliant. This means that they are electronically controlled or use some type of common rail fuel system. The goal of these EPA engines is to be more environmentally friendly- virtually smokeless. Which is a far cry from what has come to be expected from older engines.
The work required to maintain injection pressures from 20,000 to 36,000 psi with multiple or two-stage turbocharging, a complicated pre-burn and after-burn controls all takes elaborate electronic hardware and software to monitor the cooling system, fuel supply, lubrication, engine load, intake temperature, and exhaust temperature.

"Mr. Chamberlain’s work ethic and experience throughout the retrofit, coupled with his willingness to teach, instilled a higher level of expertise on our ship GRAND ISLE I would have not believed possible. Without his devotion to task completion, which included seven-day work weeks often late into the night and on holidays, GRAND ISLE certainly would not have been prepared to resume patrol status as scheduled. On behalf of my entire crew, I wish to thank Mr. Chamberlain for a job well done."
